KOTOR MMO News

I bit late, but worth noting. Feel free to either yell suXX0rz or w00t. I'm the former...

EA to Play in Knights of the Old Republic

N. Evan Van Zelfden in Los Angeles warns, watch out World of Warcraft. In an interview at E3 this week, Electronic Arts chief executive John Riccitiello said that EA is working on the next version of Star Wars game Knights of the Old Republic, and it will most certainly have a massively multiplayer online component to it. [emphasis mine]

"We've got two of the most compelling MMOs in the industry in development," said Riccitiello. The first title, based on the Warhammer property, will launch soon. "And the one that people are dying for us to talk to them about -- in partnership with Lucas, coming out of BioWare, which is, I think, quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry at the point when we get closer to telling you about it."

Does Riccitiello mean the oft rumored Knights of the Old Republic Online? "Yes," he said.

As for the bolded part, what does that imply exactly?

Of course, we recently heard that 2/3 of the announced major areas in Warhammer got cut ...

KotOR 3 as an MMO? That's disappointing.

I've never played MMOs very much, and I've never played PvE. How does that experience differ from PvP? I mean, I understand the difference in concept, but how much more or less fun is it to play?

Well, speaking from WoW experiences, PvP can sometimes get my adrenaline going whereas PvE never does. But even PvP gets old after so many hours.

I think it's the reporter's view of it, that's all. If Riccitiello is accurately quoted then it's clear BioWare is working on a SW MMORPG. Whether or not it will have a single player campaign to get started or something along those lines sounds like the question you're asking.

Also, I don't believe this game will be positioned as a successor to KotOR. Chris Priestly has stated on 3 separate occasions that BioWare is not working on KotOR 3. I'm still hopeful that LucasArts will commission KotOR 3 some day but I think there is a good chance I will end up playing my first MMORPG in the 2010 timeframe.

I'll follow it for sure, but it will have to have a pretty different for me to pick it up. Personally, I just don't like MMO gameplay.

I understand. I've been avoiding MMORPG's simply because of the time sink they seem to be. And with real life and some of the changes that go on with that I'll just have to see if it's something that fits into the life schedule at that point in time. I'm just thinking it will be easier to do so because it still doesn't seem like LucasArts has any plans for making SW games for PC. If this keeps up then by 2010 this will be the only choice I have left.
